It’s not showing up yet if you ask it to search for updates to your apps, but you can download the new Google iPhone app here.

I’ve only been playing with it for a few minutes, but the voice recognition works pretty well and pretty quickly. It got four of the first five queries I made exactly right, though it did make two errors in the last one.

I tried to look up who played Fish in the TV show Fish. I knew it was Abe Someone, so I said Fish, Abe, TV and it searched Wish, Gabe, TV. Not perfect, but much better than typing.

Update: The screen that pops up if you follow the link appears to offer the old Google app. Ignore the visuals and download away. You’ll get the new app.

The season of thankfulness is here and so is the annual “Evening of Giving,” one of the city’s most treasured traditions. On Thursday, Nov.20, 7:30 p.m. to midnight, a week before Thanksgiving, the 19th annual Evening of Giving will be held at the Best Western Royal Plaza hotel. The ever-popular raw bar will be ready for guests, with Leon Roberge and his assistants putting out 18 cases of extra large shrimp. An elaborate ice carving, created by Roberge, will decorate the raw bar. “We’ll have 15 gallons of cocktail sauce,” said Roberge. “No matter how much we bring, we run out. I don’t know what they do with it.” In addition to the shrimp there will be two cases of oysters and two cases of cherrystone clams. “They will be opened right there,” explained Roberge. More than 1,000 local residents are expected to turn out to enjoy this spectacular social event and at the same time remember those who need help. Proceeds go to Roland’s House, formerly the Marlboro-Hudson Homeless Shelter, 57 Mechanic St. Checkerboards in Hudson is just one of 30 restaurants, hotels and caterers to be represented at the Evening of Giving. “We’ll be serving eggplant Florentine and penne a la vodka, two of our most popular menu items,” said Jill Smith, one of the Checkerboards owners along with Chris Tsiros and Joe Martocci. Checkerboards, at 10 Technology Drive, has been a family business in Hudson for 17 years. The restaurant has a new eggplant and spinach flatbread pizza as well as other menu items such as cold and hot sandwiches, traditional Greek cuisine, Italian pasta specialties, pizza, calzones, steak, ribs and sea food. “Our fish is always fresh, never frozen,” stated Tsiros. The Creamery at Trombetta’s is another of the local establishments serving food at the Evening of Giving, offering the very popular ice cream sundaes that people line up for even after eating a variety of food from dozens of menu items. “It’s a great cause,” said Charlie Trombetta. “I love doing it and I can tell people really appreciate it.” The make-your-own-sundae food station is expected to offer vanilla, chocolate and coconut ice cream as well as toppings such as hot fudge, strawberries, caramel, candy toppings and whipped cream. “We’ll have the jimmy machine,” continued Trombetta. “People love the jimmy wheel. It’s like a little ferris wheel that drops the colored candy sprinkles on the ice cream.” The chefs at Christopher Heights, an assisted living facility that opened in the spring at 99 Pleasant St., are contributing to the Evening of Giving for the first time. “We’ll provide an assortment of brownies,” said Luke Savageau, executive chef at Christopher Heights. According to Savage and Wendi Baron-Willette, executive director, there will be raspberry brownies, mint brownies, peanut butter brownies, white chocolate swirl brownies, walnut brownies, and even just plain regular brownies. People attending the event are encouraged to bring a donation of socks, soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, razors, shaving cream, deodorant, shampoo, or other toiletries for the homeless. A collection bin will be set up at the entrance of the hotel. Bob Kays is serving as chairman of the event and Ivette Mesmar is coordinating the food donors. Disc Jockeys Peter and Joe VanBuskirk will be back to provide musical entertainment. In addition, the Bob Dupuis trio will play in the restaurant and the Intel Troubadours will play in the lounge. The money raffle is back, with only 300 tickets offered, and a first prize of $5,000, second prize, $1,000, and three third prizes, $500 each. Tickets for the raffle are just $50 each and can be obtained at the Prospector or Kennedy’s Pub in Marlborough, Tickets to the Evening of Giving are $30 each, $300 for a table of 10. For reservations call Madeline Dupuis, 508-485-5705 or Paulina Lynch, 508-485-3741.

‘Well I did my best to bring her back to what she used to be / Then I soon learned she loved those bright lights more than she loved me’

OK, so as everyone on the planet knows by now, the Orioles have unveiled their new uniform set. This took place about 19 entire hours ago, which means it’s already ancient history and everyone’s bored with it by now and has moved on to the next thing, but I know you’re all expecting me to write about it and I hate disappointing you (except for those times when I, y’know, enjoy disappointing you), so here we go:

? The new bird: Not exactly an earthshaking overhaul, and it’s tempting to just say, “Ah, they’re more or less the same, pass the popcorn,” but there are actually two things about the new bird that bug me: (1) The new gray beak is a decided downgrade from the old pale-ochre beak (and no, I’m not just looking for an excuse to say “ochre,” although that is a nice bonus); and (2) the new feet look fine when they’re perched on something, but they look incongruous when the bird is just perched on nothing, which is why the new cap doesn’t look as good as the old cap. So is it good or is it stupid? Stupid.

? The new road insignia: As we all know, the O’s haven’t worn “Baltimore” on their chest since 1783, so this is long overdue. Breaking up the “t” across the placket isn’t ideal, but whatever — seems to be par for the course these days. Some folks have already complained about how the script tapers. I don’t mind it on its own terms, although it doesn’t mesh well with the home script, since that one doesn’t taper. Then again, when will you ever see those two jerseys side-by-side again? No biggie. Good.

? The new left-sleeve patches: As we all know, the Maryland state flag is really cool cuz it’s really weird, and therefore it’s more or less mandatory that we give the thumbs-up to any patch based on that flag design. But here’s the thing: The O’s are actually using two flag-based patches — this one, which says “Baltimore Orioles” and is appearing on the home jersey, and this one, which says “Orioles Baseball” and is appearing on the road grays and the black alts. I much prefer the latter, because why include the word “Baltimore” on something that features the Maryland flag, esp. when Baltimore has its own flag? To all you O’s staffers reading this: Go down the clubhouse with a seam ripper, remove all the home patches from the home whites, and replace them with the other patch. NOW!! Mostly very good, but just a teeny bit stupid.

? The new right-sleeve patches: Script wordmarks are cool, but there are certain places that a script wordmark does not belong — like, say, here and here. Totally stupid.

? The new piping: As you’ve probably noticed, the home and road jerseys now have sleeve piping; as you might not be aware, that same piping pattern will now be appearing on the pants. My gut instinct here is negative (in a long-pants baseball world, pants piping just accentuates the sloppiness), but first I wanna see how it looks on the fie

Drunk on Liberty

drunk on self-determinationencouragement to those who want to spread the messageby isaac m. morehousemost people value liberty. at their core, most people prefer self-direction to coercion, choice to mandates, and peace to violence. many people just don’t recall it.libertarians often lament the dilemma of convincing the world that freedom is the most moral and practical choice. but judgement the nature of the wriggle is key to overcoming it. as tough as it seems, convincing people of libertarian ideas is hardly ever analogous to pulling teeth. it’s more like introducing someone to alcohol for the first time.it’s unfamiliar, a bit too distinct and well-intentioned of weird. the first taste doesn’t sit grandly. the second isn’t much better. a little more time again and a few more tries and it’s bearable, but certainly nothing to write home about. before long, life can hardly be imagined without it, and the initiated find that they do things under its influence they couldn’t have imagined ahead. (inevitably, some pictures of those things end up on facebook, but up front long they go from embarrassing to brag-worthy.)with drink and liberty, you forced to start sweet, without much potency. starting with ludwig von mises’s human conduct is like introducing an abstainer to alcohol with a cask-stand. the uninitiated typically come back to “foo foo” very properly. at foremost they’ll tell you it’s the sweetness they in the manner of, and that they could do without the potent ingredients. camouflage b confine serving them. soon, the sweetness pass on be an unnecessary afterthought, and they will imbibe to go aboard b enter the good stuff and get it fast.there’s something in human beings that almost universally reacts to alcohol. it’s nearly often an acquired taste, nonetheless cranny of account the peoples and societies that have tried it get fallen in love with it, created latest versions of it and unruffled invented elaborate games and festivities around it. it is enjoyed by people of every breed, religion, language and impost. so it is with liberty.if someone coughs and winces a bit when you offer them their first taste of self-government, don’t be discouraged. soften it up, serve it again and wait for the results. soon they’ll be a “social” libertarian; next they’ll brag about how much franchise they can handle, and finally, if the substance works its enchanting, they’ll be consuming altruist action even when unparalleled.

—————–

Note: Don’t get carried away. Like all analogies, it obviously breaks down at some point. Too much alcohol is very, very bad. Freedom on the other hand, like truth and justice, is not something that can be had in excess, as it is itself the mean between vices. If you’re in a huff about this claim, read this.

Blockbuster’s Set-Top Box Will Flop

After Netflix had introduced its streaming video service on the Roku set-top box, and after Netflix had teamed up with TiVo and Microsoft’s Xbox division and even debuted a Mac-compatible service to expand its reach into America’s home entertainment settings, Blockbuster, the once-was movie rental giant that continues to lose relevance in an increasingly convenience- and price-conscious market, is said to be readying the launch of a net-connected device of its own this holiday season.

It’s probably too late.

Netflix is King

We should wait until the product arrives in consumers’ hands before making any firm judgements, of course, but there’s no escaping the truth that Blockbuster has done little to make America want to give it some mojo once more. Netflix ran circles around the greybeard in the DVD-by-mail market. I sense the same will be the case in the budding movie download and streaming market.

Apart from a shift in its customer service support process, as well as a bit of noise about a premium charged for HD rentals, Netflix has done little to really drive users away from its catalogue. And while there’s always been demand for more film titles delivered on-demand via the company’s streaming video servers, the fact is that it is continually improving, and the quality of HD streams now available to select users has impressed critics.

Blockbuster, meanwhile, purchases its video download service MovieLink and has done little with the acquisition other than introduce a concept to install movie download kiosks within its brick-and-mortar chain of locations. Not a very proactive use of time, you might say.

A Continued Need to Compete

Still, Blockbuster has little choice to do anything but proceed with this launch, whatever the device might be. (Whether it’s an inexpensive solution or a hybrid Blu-Ray setup, Blockbuster will not say.)

Mind you, on top of the requisite hardware factor, the only saving graces the company might have at this point are:

1. Aggressive pricing,

2. A complete download option in the mode of Amazon Video on Demand and Apple’s iTunes service for the Apple TV,

3. A vast library of material to choose from. This is by far the most important of all.

John holmes penis

The chance that Blockbuster will deliver on fronts 1, 2 & 3: slim to none.
